The day of the Unicorn Party

In the first few weeks of school, in February, Nicky had told all her new friends in Prep F that they were cordially invited to her birthday party… which was in November. She had asked and we had promised the party for her sixth birthday and being five, the difference between ten days and ten months was nothing. And she was excited for the whole year until the big day arrived… the day of the Unicorn Party.

Melbourne Cup

I was once invited to a Melbourne Cup lunch for a group of preschooler mums, or MOPs as we were affectionately titled. It was a rare occasion for most of us MOPs to attend such an event, much less to suddenly trade our daggy house ensembles for something far more fashionable. The Melbourne Cup conundrum of course, is to source a suitable millinery masterpiece. I’m sure my preschooler could have whipped something up for me in a flash with bits of sticks and feathers and torn up tissues, and she would have said I looked fabulous. Anyway, of course I left it to the last minute. I could not find a single thing to wear on my head and instead opted for a hot pink clip in the shape of a hibiscus flower with a little silver bling around the edges. And what do you know? I won the prize for the smallest hat.

Spring

My 6yo daughter says spring is her favourite month because she loves flowers, and also because her birthday is in spring. She loves birthdays. I love spring too. I love the spectacular blue of the sky, my favourite colour, and the new warmth in the air. Sometimes I think it would be nice to fly to the northern hemisphere for one half of the year and then fly south for the other, spending every day in spring or summer. But I guess it’s not quite as wonderful if you don’t experience the winter that precedes it, a little bit like life really.

One idea for a spring party is an afternoon tea with chairs and a couple of tables scattered in the garden. Decorate with pastel colours and butterflies, serve champagne and strawberries, hors d'oeuvres, little sandwiches and sweets, and invite your guests to wear white. Relax, chat, and enjoy the magic of natures very best.

A Shower for Imke

My friends are very creative and were excited about organising a baby shower for another friend and her beautiful newborn baby girl, Imke. Planning and crafting over several evenings which in itself was kind of fun, we managed to put together some awesome decor which was much appreciated by our new mum, and the shower was a brilliant success.

A Frangipani Themed Celebration

Frangipani, or Plumeria, or Hawaiian Lei Flower as they are also known, are stunning tropical blooms with a strong exotic fragrance. Both popular and indeed spectacular, they make a great theme for any celebration. However, Frangipanis are also especially fragile and short lived once they are picked from the tree.

A Rainbow in your Birthday Bread

Their eyes widened in an instant, like that would make them see better - they needed to be to sure it was real. Their mouths were opened just a little - but they couldn't speak, they were thinking, "What is this stuff?". But they were excited and when the instant was over they were loud, excited, licking their lips in anticipation...
