Melbourne Cup

I was once invited to a Melbourne Cup lunch for a group of preschooler mums, or MOPs as we were affectionately titled. It was a rare occasion for most of us MOPs to attend such an event, much less to suddenly trade our daggy house ensembles for something far more fashionable. The Melbourne Cup conundrum of course, is to source a suitable millinery masterpiece. I’m sure my preschooler could have whipped something up for me in a flash with bits of sticks and feathers and torn up tissues, and she would have said I looked fabulous. Anyway, of course I left it to the last minute. I could not find a single thing to wear on my head and instead opted for a hot pink clip in the shape of a hibiscus flower with a little silver bling around the edges. And what do you know? I won the prize for the smallest hat.

Melbourne Cup Day is a great excuse to entertain whether it be at the races, or a venue or at home. It’s the perfect opportunity to add a little glam to your table and enjoy the company of your friends, have a laugh and just take life a little less seriously for a moment. And at the end of the day, the stylish and the no longer stylish can walk home together with their shoes in their hands and their friends on their shoulders and remember very little about a horse race, and much more about a great time spent together.
