The day of the Unicorn Party

Posted 30 January 2014 by ness

In the first few weeks of school, in February, Nicky had told all her new friends in Prep F that they were cordially invited to her birthday party… which was in November. She had asked and we had promised the party for her sixth birthday and being five, the difference between ten days and ten months was nothing. And she was excited for the whole year until the big day arrived… the day of the Unicorn Party.

INVITATIONS

In October, Nicky finally got to hand out her Unicorn Party invitations:

PARTY ENTRANCE

We had decorated the driveway with chalk hearts and sprinkled them with glitter, and there were balloons on the letterbox, of course.

PARTY COLOURS AND DÉCOR

The colours we chose were pink, green, and blue, with a dash of purple… with white stripes or spots.

Girl Party Colours

At the local bargain store, we were lucky enough to find a number of items for only a couple of dollars each:

  • Pink flags with spots and green flags with stripes
  • Pink lanterns
  • Pink and green paper cups with stripes and spots
  • Pink and blue plastic table cloths

UNICORN HORNS

We made unicorn horns out of metallic cardboard and glittery ribbon and placed them in a basket on the table.

GAMES

Party classics were chosen by the birthday girl including:

  • A treasure hunt in the garden
  • Pass the Parcel
  • Musical Statues

We also had unicorn relay races using crafted pool noodle unicorns:

and a Unicorn Piñata, also purchased from the bargain store:

FACE PAINTING

With the help of Nicky's very artistic aunty and PaperWeb designer Wendy Cook, little faces were painted using paints purchased from our local Spotlight store. To make it easier, girls could choose from Rainbow, Butterfly, Princess, Flower, or Puppy designs. For the boys (and some of the girls), the choices were Spiderman, Flame, Dragon, Tiger or Dog designs.

PARTY BAGS

were simple green spots for the girls and blue stripes for the boys:
