The Communist Party of China extended an invitation to Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to visit China. This invitation came during a bilateral meeting between the BNP and the Communist Party of China (CPC) held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The meeting, which took place on June 23, 2025, was significant in fostering political relations and exploring avenues for cooperation between the two parties.
Li Hongzhong, the Deputy of the China National Congress, personally invited Tarique Rahman to China during the meeting. The BNP delegation, led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, engaged in discussions with CPC leaders on enhancing party-to-party collaboration and contributing to regional peace and stability. Tarique Rahman, who has been residing in London since his release from prison in 2008, plays a crucial role in BNP leadership.
The meeting was a platform for both sides to express their commitment to strengthening ties and deepening mutual understanding. The CPC officials expressed optimism that this interaction would mark a new phase in China-Bangladesh relations. Fakhrul praised China’s regional influence and highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between the parties.
Prior to the meeting, the BNP delegation visited China Railway Group Limited, where they familiarized themselves with China’s advancements in railway and infrastructure development. The delegation, comprising senior BNP leaders and advisors, aimed to bolster the existing relationship between Bangladesh and China, recognizing China as a key development partner for the country.
This visit underscores the BNP’s strategic intent to forge closer bonds with China, aligning with Bangladesh’s interests in economic and infrastructural growth. Notably, earlier in the year, a delegation representing various political parties, including the BNP, had undertaken an 11-day visit to China, reflecting the growing importance of diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
The invitation extended to Tarique Rahman symbolizes the evolving dynamics of international relations and the significance of inter-party dialogues in shaping global partnerships. As Bangladesh seeks to strengthen its ties with key allies, such interactions serve as stepping stones towards fostering greater collaboration and mutual prosperity.
