Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is gearing up to celebrate the ‘Gauravshali Maharashtra’ festival from May 1 to 4, marking the 65th anniversary of Maharashtra’s formation. The highlight of the event will be the felicitation of all past chief ministers of Maharashtra, showcasing their contributions over the last six and a half decades.
Despite the party split two years ago, Ajit Pawar’s NCP plans to extend a formal invitation to veteran politician Sharad Pawar to attend the event on Maharashtra Day, May 1. The NCP leadership, including executive president Praful Patel, aims to invite Sharad Pawar personally, recognizing his significant role in the state’s political landscape.
As preparations continue for the festival, NCP state president Sunil Tatkare emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of past chief ministers. The event will feature five pavilions, one dedicated to showcasing the achievements and leadership of the state’s former leaders.
Reflecting on the historical significance of Maharashtra’s formation on May 1, 1960, Tatkare highlighted the cultural and celebratory events that will span four days, replicating the festive spirit that marked the state’s inception.

When questioned about Sharad Pawar’s potential participation, Tatkare reiterated the veteran leader’s undeniable contributions to Maharashtra and the nation. He acknowledged Pawar’s stature as a four-time chief minister and a respected national figure, underscoring the importance of extending an invitation to him.
However, sources within the NCP-SP suggest that Sharad Pawar has not yet received a formal invitation from the NCP. Given the political dynamics and history between the Pawar family members, there remains uncertainty about Sharad Pawar’s presence at the party function.
Since the party split, Ajit and Sharad Pawar have maintained a professional demeanor in public appearances, setting aside their political differences. Their interactions have been limited to official engagements and family events, with both leaders refraining from making any political statements post-assembly elections.
As the NCP prepares to honor the legacy of past chief ministers and celebrate Maharashtra’s history, the invitation extended to Sharad Pawar symbolizes a potential moment of reconciliation and unity within the party. The festival serves as a platform to recognize and appreciate the diverse contributions of leaders who have shaped Maharashtra’s political landscape over the decades.
