Humane Society International/India has introduced the Swarnali Roy Award for Vegan Advocacy to recognize individuals in India who actively promote a plant-based lifestyle. This award is a tribute to the late Ms. Swarnali Roy, who played a pivotal role in advancing plant-based campaigns and reducing animal cruelty in intensive farming practices. Her legacy continues to inspire a new generation of advocates dedicated to advocating for a compassionate future.
Alokparna Sengupta, the managing director of HSI/India, emphasized Swarnali’s commitment to animal welfare and the significant impact of her mentorship in nurturing young advocates. The award aims to honor her memory by supporting and showcasing the exceptional efforts of individuals driving the vegan movement in India. The recognition will be an annual event, with the first awards scheduled to be announced on April 5th, coinciding with Swarnali Roy’s birthday.
Nominations are open to Indian residents over the age of 18 who actively promote veganism at various levels, be it locally, regionally, or nationally. The award will be granted across three categories, with the top awardee receiving INR 50,000, followed by INR 30,000 for the second place, and INR 20,000 for the third. The selection process will be overseen by a diverse panel of experts and advocates with a deep commitment to the vegan cause.
To nominate a deserving individual or oneself for the award, interested parties must submit the nomination form by March 25, 2023, through HSI’s official website. The eligibility criteria require nominees to be legal residents of India, aged 18 or above, with incomplete or false submissions deemed invalid. Employees of Humane Society International (HSI) and affiliated organizations, as well as their immediate family members, are ineligible for nomination.
The selection of awardees will be based on specific criteria focusing on motivation, personal growth, and impact within the vegan advocacy sphere. Awardees will be contacted via email and announced publicly, with prizes subject to income tax regulations. The award aims to not only recognize outstanding contributions but also to inspire a broader community of advocates to champion the cause of animal welfare and plant-based living.
By fostering a culture of appreciation for vegan advocacy, HSI/India seeks to amplify the voices of those dedicated to creating a more compassionate world for animals. The Swarnali Roy Award serves as a beacon of recognition for individuals whose tireless efforts contribute significantly to the advancement of animal protection in India. Through this initiative, HSI/India aims to drive positive change and encourage a growing movement towards a more sustainable and humane future for all living beings.
